So I wrote this on Thursday but I couldn’t publish it because the internet went down…enjoy!
Last night was amazing. Once a week, we have a time for local outreach. This week we went to a shelter in downtown San José to help serve dinner and just hang out with the people there. Not many of us needed to help with food, so I was on the hang out committee. At first I was really nervous for several reasons, first of all because we were in a really rough part of town. When we first got there, we had to wait to get out of the vans because it wasn’t totally safe. So yeah super sketch. I was also worried about the language barrier. I know some Spanish, but I’m far from fluent. The good thing is pretty much everything I hear in English and Spanish, so I’m able to understand, or at least get the general idea of everything that’s said. Speaking? Not so much, but it’s a work in progress. I’ve been getting a lot of practice here, so little by little, right?
Ok back to last night. I was pretty worried about just going up to people who literally just came off the streets and didn’t speak my language. But God works with what we have if we’re willing to give it to Him. One of the guys on the DTS staff really encouraged me (and kinda dragged me) to go talk to people. He came with me to talk to a guy who was sitting by himself near a door. So we both went over to him. I didn’t say anything to that guy because inside the door were 5 other guys and I talked with them. We actually conversed! It was really exciting; they even said my Spanish was good! For me that’s such a huge testimony to how God really does work through us regardless of if we feel capable. So I was able to talk with these guys. I told them what I was here for and stuff. Over the course of the night I prayed with 2 guys. It was just a really cool experience. I think our group is going to go back there sometime, so that will be cool. Hopefully my Spanish will be even better then.
Oh and God is sending me to Central America for outreach! I can’t wait to see what He’s going to do!!!
